Introducing Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) to Healthcare Providers in Kenya
Mental health remains an important but often overlooked component of healthcare delivery. Healthcare providers frequently encounter clients who have experienced trauma, grief, violence, stigma, and other life challenges that affect their wellbeing. Strengthening the capacity of providers to respond to these needs is critical for delivering holistic and person-centered care.
In 2025, Help REACH Africa (HERA), in collaboration with Yale University, introduced healthcare providers in Nairobi County to Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), an innovative evidence-based mental health intervention designed to help individuals process traumatic experiences and reduce psychological distress.
What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a brief therapeutic approach that uses guided eye movements and visualization techniques to help individuals process distressing memories and experiences. The approach has been used internationally to support individuals experiencing trauma, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Unlike some traditional therapeutic approaches, ART can often be delivered in a relatively short period while helping individuals achieve meaningful emotional relief.
Building Local Capacity
As part of the initiative, 24 healthcare providers participated in sessions introducing them to the principles and application of Accelerated Resolution Therapy.
The training created opportunities for providers to learn about emerging mental health approaches while strengthening their understanding of trauma-informed care. Participants included healthcare professionals working in facilities serving diverse populations, including vulnerable and underserved communities.
Why This Matters
Mental health challenges often affect individuals' ability to access healthcare, adhere to treatment, and maintain overall wellbeing. Integrating mental health approaches into broader health programs contributes to more comprehensive and effective service delivery.
By introducing healthcare providers to ART, HERA continues to support innovative approaches that strengthen healthcare systems and improve patient outcomes.
Looking Ahead
The experience demonstrated the value of partnerships between local organizations and academic institutions in bringing innovative health solutions closer to communities. HERA remains committed to exploring evidence-based approaches that improve health and wellbeing across Kenya.
