Digital Innovation for HIV Prevention — Lessons from Jenga Beshte
Technology continues to create new opportunities for expanding healthcare access and reaching populations that may face barriers to traditional services.
Between 2020 and 2022, Help REACH Africa (HERA), in collaboration with Yale University, Q-Initiative, and Health Options for Young Men on HIV/AIDS/STIs (HOYMAS), implemented the Jenga Beshte Project.
The project explored how web-based peer support could increase HIV testing among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Kenya.
Addressing Social Isolation and Stigma
Many MSM face stigma, discrimination, and social isolation, factors that can reduce access to HIV prevention and testing services.
Jenga Beshte sought to address these challenges by exploring how digital platforms could provide:
- Peer support
- Health information
- Mentorship
- Referrals to health services
- Safe spaces for engagement and discussion
Conducting Research During a Pandemic
The project was implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, requiring innovative approaches to research and participant engagement.
HERA successfully led remote qualitative data collection through:
- Online focus group discussions
- WhatsApp-based discussions
- In-depth interviews
- Virtual stakeholder engagement
This demonstrated the feasibility of conducting high-quality research even during periods of restricted movement.
Key Achievements
The project successfully:
- Conducted virtual focus group discussions and interviews
- Reached participants through digital platforms
- Supported the development of a peer-support mobile application
The study generated important insights into the role of technology in strengthening HIV prevention and support services.
Why It Matters
Digital health approaches can help overcome barriers related to stigma, geography, and limited access to services.
The lessons learned from Jenga Beshte continue to inform efforts to leverage technology for HIV prevention, community engagement, and health promotion among vulnerable populations.
Looking Ahead
As digital health solutions continue to evolve, HERA remains committed to exploring innovative approaches that increase healthcare access, strengthen community connections, and improve health outcomes for underserved populations.
