The Energy as a Service (EaaS) Study was implemented by Help REACH Africa (HERA) in partnership with Human Planet (formerly KOIS) and the Busara Center for Behavioral Economics.
The study explored the potential of Energy as a Service (EaaS) as a sustainable and cost-effective approach to improving energy access in Private Primary Healthcare Facilities (PPHFs) in Kenya.
Reliable energy is essential for quality healthcare delivery. However, many healthcare facilities face frequent power interruptions, high electricity costs, and limited access to financing for renewable energy solutions. The study sought to identify practical financing and service models that could improve access to affordable and reliable energy while supporting healthcare service delivery.

The study used a mixed-methods research approach, combining qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys with healthcare facilities and financial institutions across Kajiado, Makueni, and Siaya Counties.
HERA provided technical and implementation support throughout the study, including stakeholder engagement, ethical approvals, research tool development, data collection, analysis, and reporting.
Reliable electricity is often taken for granted, yet it is essential for healthcare facilities to provide quality services such as laboratory testing, maternity care, refrigeration of medicines and vaccines, and emergency care.
Through the EaaS study, healthcare facility managers shared how frequent power outages and high energy costs affect daily operations and increase the cost-of-service delivery. The research also highlighted a strong interest among healthcare facilities in renewable energy solutions, particularly when supported through flexible financing options that reduce upfront costs.
The findings are contributing to the development of innovative financing and energy models that have the potential to improve healthcare service delivery while supporting the transition to sustainable energy solutions in Kenya.
